1 〔応報･天罰〕 retribution; (a) punishment; a nemesis 《pl. -ses》; a visitation; deserts; 《口》 comeuppance.

●悪事の報い the fruit of an evil deed

・愚行の報い the harvest of one's follies

・前世の報い Karma from a past [previous] life.

●悪いことをすれば必ず報いが来る. An evil deed brings inevitable retribution. | Wickedness never goes unrequited.

●…の報いで as a result of…; in consequence of…

・授業をさぼった報いで単位を落としてしまった. Because of skipping classes, he did not pass the course.

●報いを受ける suffer [pay dearly] for 《one's carelessness》; face the consequences 《of…》; face the music

・当然の報いを受ける get what one deserves; reap what one sows

・彼は当然の報いを受けたのだ. He only got his deserts. | 《口》 He had it coming.

・彼はついにその報いを受けることになった. Retribution at last overtook him.

・過去の残虐非道の報いを今受けている. They are now paying the penalty for their atrocities in the past.

●貧しい庶民を苦しめた報いだ. They are paying the penalty for their cruelty to poor people.

・それは君がこれまで遊び回ってきた当然の報いだ. That's what you get for being so lazy [playing around].

2 〔報償〕 (a) recompense; (a) compensation; (a) reward; (an) atonement; a return.

・努力への報いとして相応のボーナスを与える give sb a suitable bonus in return for their efforts

・何の報いも求めず without expecting any reward [anything in return].

・それは彼女の労苦に対する当然の報いだ. That is the due reward for all her hard work [efforts].
